Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

For the purposes of this site, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an emerging inventory and supply chain control technology being deployed in the consumer goods supply chain. This application has been receiving a lot of attention in response to mandates issued by Wal-Mart, the US Department of Defense (DoD), Target and others. In broader context, RFID has a history tracing back to World War II, where radio was used to identify aircraft as friend or foe (IFF), and a number of mature civilian applications, including livestock tracking, automatic toll collection, and the Exxon Mobil Speedpass» automatic payment system.
