We took a look at the CHIP IPO because we have long been interested in names related to RFID. Our impression is that the rest of the RFID industry is keen NOT to be associated with CHIP because most applications are related to supply chain efficiencies, whereas CHIP’s RFID equipment is specifically targeted at tracking people, not objects.

 

Unfortunately, since this is one of the first RFID startups to go public in the U.S., it will likely serve as something of a bellwether.

Applied Digital Solutions announced yesterday that it will take VeriChip public. Applied Digital manufactures security and identification products based on a number of technologies, including RFID. A subsidiary of Applied Digital, VeriChip manufactures the controversial human-implantable RFID tag of the same name.

VeriChip, maker of the VeriMed RFID system based on a human-implantable passive RFID tag, as well as other RFID tracking systems for people, assets and animals, said last week that it filed a registration statement for the initial public offering (IPO) of shares of its common stock. ... Approximately 800 hospitals use VeriChip’s tags to monitor infant location within maternity wards, and 68 hospitals are enabled to read the VeriMed implantable tag and access the corresponding medical records of the bearer.
